Good to know:
Merino sheep's wool is made up of extremely fine fibres, which are many times finer than the wool fibres from other sheep. In addition, its highly crimped structure means that fabrics made from Merino fibres feel extremely soft and comfortable against the skin. This crimping makes Merino wool very airy, so it's a highly effective insulator that will keep you warm even at temperatures around the zero mark. But this fabric also possesses other desirable qualities. It is naturally breathable, dirt-repellent and quick-drying. Protein molecules in the merino fibres (keratin) remove odour-forming bacteria (sweat). What's more, Merino wool is able to absorb a high proportion of its own weight in moisture without feeling damp or losing its thermal insulation effect, in contrast to cotton, for example. All of these characteristics are powerful reasons for wearing base layers made from Merino wool. -
